Who Will You Live With Next Year?

One of the most common worries surrounding living on campus is whether or not you’re going to like your roommate. Fortunately for you, at Nova Southeastern University, we let you take the lead in selecting your roommate(s). Deciding who you’ll live with isn’t the easiest choice, and sometimes living with your best friend isn’t the best choice. It isn’t too soon to start planning now.

Once you have identified one or more people as potential roommates, make sure you have reliable means to chat with them throughout the remainder of this process. Discuss the following in advance:

  • Which residence hall do you want to live in?
  • What are your RMS (Roommate Selection) IDs?
  • Who has the earliest room selection date and time?

Only one person needs to initiate the roommate selection process, so make sure you’re all on the same page before the process begins.

Choosing a Roommate: Step-by-Step

If you know who you’d like to live with, it is important that you and your intended roommate(s) complete your housing application prior to the roommate selection deadline.

Additionally, you’ll need to have the ability to share information with one another, like your RMS ID number and assigned selection days and times.

Note: Only one person in your roommate group will need to complete this process from start to finish.

Ready to Select Your Roommates?

Log in to the Student Housing Portal.

The roommate selection process takes place in the Housing Portal.

You will receive your self-selection day and time after you have successfully submitted your housing contract on or before the posted deadline. (See Important Dates below.)

You will need your intended roommate's or roommates' RMS ID number(s) for this step. This number can be found in the email that includes your self-selection day and time. You will need to click Finish to complete the process.

Review Summary and Finish

Review the details of the room you’ve selected. You have the option to Email or Download the details of your room selection if you wish; while this isn’t required, it is encouraged.

If everything looks in order, click Finish at the bottom of the page before the countdown at the top of the page times out. Failure to do so will lead to your selection being released.

What's Next?

All those whose RMS ID numbers were entered in Step 5 above will receive an invitation via email. Once they receive the invitation, they will need to confirm or decline the invite in the Housing Portal. Once all parties have agreed, you will receive a confirmation email.

Only one person from your roommate group will need to complete the Room Selection Process. As such, we recommend that you compare your assigned self-selection days and times to discuss who should be responsible for selecting your room, suite, or apartment.

Living with a Roommate

The key to healthy roommate relations goes far beyond the length of time knowing one another, and many friendships have ended due to roommate drama.

Before you make the commitment, we encourage you to have a few chats about your preferences, deal-breakers, and how you plan to communicate when you need time apart. For more suggested topics to discuss, flip through the Residential Living Guide.

Residency Exemptions

If you fall into one of the below categories, you are exempt from the On-Campus Residency Requirement: (the same exemptions below apply)

  • You will reside with a parent or legal guardian within the tri-county area (Broward, Dade, or Palm Beach).
  • You are married or in a domestic partnership.
  • You are a veteran or active United States military personnel.

If you fall into one of the categories above and do not intend to live on campus, you should not complete a housing contract.
